In the latest development, England seamer Jamie Overton has decided not to continue playing red-ball cricket for the foreseeable future. The fast bowler revealed that he would be taking an indefinite break and would only concentrate on white-ball cricket due to workload management.

Too much cricket a burden for Overton

The England, and CSK pacer has played 99 first-class games for Surrey and Somerset, and has represented England in two Tests, but playing across formats has taken a toll on his body, and the pacer has decided to focus only on T20Is, and ODI cricket.

"Red-ball, first-class cricket has provided the foundation for my professional career and has been the gateway to every opportunity I’ve had in the game so far. It’s where I learnt the game, and it fuelled the goals and ambitions that have driven me for so long," as quoted by ECB Website.

"However, at this stage of my career, with the demands of cricket across a 12-month calendar, it’s no longer possible to commit fully to all formats at every level, both physically and mentally.

"Going forward, my focus will be on white-ball cricket, and I will continue to give everything to play at the highest level for as long as I can."

A look back at Overton's red-ball career

Jamie Overton, the 6ft, 5 inch bowler, attracted the attention of the England selectors at a young age, and he was blessed with unusual pace and height, and the pacer often took advantage of it. In his illustrious career, Overton has represented Surrey and Somerset in English domestic red-ball competition and has scalped 239 wickets in 99 games.

After a couple of stellar domestic seasons, Overton was drafted into the England Test squad for the series against New Zealand in 2022, but injuries hampered his career, and as a result, the pacer decided to solely focus on white-ball cricket.
