Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) English all-rounder Jamie Overton remains in awe of the unparalleled adulation MS Dhoni commands from the Yellow Army at the MA Chidambaram Stadium during IPL 2025.

The legendary wicketkeeper, revered as a demigod by CSK fans, continues to electrify the Chepauk crowd with every appearance. Whether batting, keeping, or simply stepping onto the field, MS Dhoni’s presence triggers deafening roars, transcending match situations and amplifying the stadium’s electric atmosphere.

Overton Bowled Over by Dhoni's Chepauk Earthquake

Overton, playing his debut IPL season, highlighted the surreal experience of witnessing Dhoni’s reception during CSK’s opener against Mumbai Indians. Despite the tense finish after Ravindra Jadeja’s run-out, the crowd’s frenzy for Dhoni left the Englishman stunned.

"I messaged my dad and my agent after the first home game. I was like, 'You have to come out and experience MS walking out to the middle. [Ravindra] Jadeja got run-out… and you had a home crowd cheering for someone to get run-out. I've watched Premier League games, plenty of other sports events, and there's nothing else like that noise," Overton told ESPNCricinfo.

While Dhoni remained unbeaten on zero in that game, fans eagerly awaited his signature finish, which never materialised as Rachin Ravindra sealed the chase with a six.

Overton Adapts His Game Under Dhoni

Overton, tasked with a similar lower-order role, revealed studying Dhoni’s technique during nets to adapt to subcontinental conditions.

"He holds the bat quite low with his hands, whereas I'm more an English or Australian version, with quite high hands. The spinners don't get as much bounce [in India] so I'm trying to be a bit lower, with my hands a bit more relaxed... I feel like I'm in a good place with my batting," he explained.

With CSK set to face Sunrisers Hyderabad next, Dhoni—now leading the side after Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury—faces mounting pressure to revive their campaign midway through the tournament. The Chepauk faithful, however, will care little for the stakes as long as their icon takes the field.
