New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee injured his right thumb while attempting to complete a catch during the 14th over of the English innings. The cricketer knacked his thumb at the gully region, while Joe Root escaped with life, only to be dismissed a while later by Kiwi spinner Rachin Ravindra.

Southee subsequently walked off with the team's medical assistance and is unlikely to return to the field at this stage.

Southee follows Mitchell in NZ injury list

Tim Southee injured his right thumb on the field and was forced out of New Zealand's series-deciding fourth ODI against hosts England. Earlier in the same game, star Kiwi all-rounder Daryl Mitchell also dislocated his left ring finger while completing Jonny Bairstow's catch to give his teammate Matt Henry his first wicket of the innings.

Injuries to Mitchell and Southee have already rung alarm bells within the New Zealand camp, considering they are just weeks away from playing their first World Cup 2023 match against the same opponents in India.

As per Southee's thumb injury, it remains to be seen at what stage the speedster will return to the field.

In the meantime, his dropped catch off Joe Root did not prove costly for New Zealand as spinner Rachin Ravindra cleaned up the former English captain for 29.

The ongoing series between England and New Zealand marks one of their final set of fixtures before taking flight for India for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023. The two teams will also face each other in the tournament's opening match on October 5 at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
