Riding on the back of a record breaking innings from Ben Stokes, followed by an all-round bowling performance with the ball, England beat New Zealand by a hammering 181-run margin in the third ODI in London on Wednesday, September 14th. After starting with a defeat in the first ODI at Cardiff, Jos Buttler and his men have now won two back to back games to take an unassailable 2-1 lead in the four-match series.

After being asked to bat first, England got off to a poor start, losing two early wickets in the powerplay. Trent Boult, at his usual best with the new ball, removed Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root to reduce the hosts to 13/2 inside the first three overs.

In reply, opener Dawid Malan, who sat out during the second ODI, launched a counterattack to put the pressure back on the visitors. Ben Stokes, at four, took his time initially but started to open his hands following the powerplay.

The duo added 199 runs for the third wicket, before Malan departed with four short of his fifth ODI century. However, Stokes continued the onslaught at the other end, completed his fourth ODI century and went on to make the highest-ever individual ODI score by an England player.

The pitch seemed to be an absolute belter and, at one stage, England were looking like going past the 400-run mark pretty easily. Boult, however, continued the one man show for New Zealand as the left-armer cleaned up the English tail pretty quickly and claimed his 6th ODI five-wicket haul.

Dominant England skittles NZ to 187

In pursuit of a mammoth 369, New Zealand got off to a very poor start as they fell prey to an extraordinary new ball spell of Chris Woakes. If felt like a totally different surface to what we saw during England's innings with the way Woakes was bowling.

New Zealand were four down with only 60 on the board at the end of the 15th over. Woakes bowled eight overs on the trot and claimed three wickets. Thereafter, the Kiwis went on to lose in form Daryl Mitchell within the next two overs to further derail the NZ chase.

Glenn Phillips did made some notable runs in the middle but it was never going to be enough for the Kiwis to even have a chance to be back in the game. Eventually, NZ got all out for 187 with England going 2-1 up in the series with one game to go at Lords.
