Rohit Sharma produced a majestic 53 against Sri Lanka before India’s top-order collapse in their Super Four Asia Cup 2023 duel. Charting his third successive fifty-plus score this competition, the Indian captain also scaled a number of records through his latest match-winning effort.

For starters, Sharma completed 10,000 runs in ODIs and became the second fastest in the world to do so. He also reached 8,000 runs as an opener, doing so in 13 innings lesser than previous-record holder Hashim Amla.

Former South African captain AB de Villiers has now acknowledged Sharma’s momentous occasion and praised the Indian skipper for his latest batting laurels.

AB de Villiers expresses admiration for Sharma

AB de Villiers, a batting legend himself, recently praised Rohit Sharma and acknowledged his recent 10,000-run milestone in ODIs.

AB de Villiers highlighted Sharma’s meteoric rise as an ODI batsman, and hailed his fighting spirit across all conditions and match situations.

"I have lots of respect for Rohit Sharma, he was the 4th slowest to complete 2000 runs & now, 2nd fastest to complete 10000 runs - he always has the fighting spirit & would not back down to anyone," the former Proteas batter said.

Sharma, who launched his international career in 2007, was the third slowest Indian cricketer to complete 2,000 runs early in his career. However, he reversed his batting fortunes as an opener to become the second quickest in the world (after Virat Kohli) to complete 10,000 ODI runs.

Rohit Sharma is currently in Sri Lanka, alongside Virat Kohli and the rest of his teammates for the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. Under Sharma’s guidance, Team India registered emphatic wins over Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka to storm into the finals, where they will face the Dasun Shanaka-led side on September 17.
