The England cricket team was handed a penalty of two WTC 2025-27 points for maintaining a slow over-rate against India at Lord’s. Andre Russell has confirmed his retirement from international cricket. In other news, the Asia Cup 2025 meeting will likely be rescheduled from Bangladesh.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Wednesday, July 16.
England Fined For Slow Over-Rate At Lord’s
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed a fined of 10 percent of their match fees on the England cricket team for maintaining a slow over-rate against India in the recently-concluded third Test at Lord’s. Moreover, the Englishmen were also docked two crucial points from their ICC WTC 2025-27 tally.
Match Referee Richie Richardson imposed the sanctions after determining that England team fell two overs short of their required rate, even after factoring time allowances. England’s current 2025-27 WTC tally stands at 22 points after playing three matches, courtesy of two wins and a defeat.
Asia Cup 2025 Meeting Likely To Shift From Dhaka
The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) will likely reschedule the upcoming annual general meeting (AGM) away from Dhaka in Bangladesh citing security concerns expressed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), as reported by a Times of India editor. Earlier, the BCCI reportedly refused to send its top officials to Bangladesh on grounds of the prevailing diplomatic and political tensions between the two countries. One of the primary agendas of the meeting was to discuss the fate of the 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup.
Joe Root Replaces Brook; Gill Slips And Jadeja Rises In Rankings
Joe Root reclaimed his number one spot on the ICC rankings among Test batters. The legendary English batter recently plundered scores of 104 and 40 across both innings of the Lord’s Test against India, in a match-winning cause.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill faced minor dips on the top 10 batting charts after their recent batting failures. Ravindra Jadeja, however, rose five spots to occupy number 34 position for his twin fifties at the venue against England.
Krunal Helps RCB Teammate Jitesh Sharma Move To Baroda
Jitesh Sharma has officially switched from Vidarbha to Baroda for the upcoming 2025-26 Indian domestic season. Notably, the RCB superstar received assistance from his IPL teammate and Indian all-rounder Krunal Pandya. As reported by ESPNCricinfo, Krunal played a significant role in Jitesh’s transfer. It is worth noting that the wicketkeeper-batter decided to leave Vidarbha earlier this year after getting benched throughout the 2024-25 season.
Both Jitesh and Pandya recently enjoyed IPL 2025 success for the RCB franchise under the leadership of Rajat Patidar.
Andre Russell To Retire From International Cricket Amid AUS Series
Legendary West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has confirmed his retirement from international cricket. The two-time T20 World Cup winning cricketer will retire after playing the first two T20Is of the upcoming five-match home series against Australia. Both matches will be hosted by the Sabina Park in Kingston. Russell has so far featured in one Test, 56 ODIs and 84 T20I matches for the West Indies cricket team since his international debut back in November 2010.
