West Indies star all-rounder Andre Russell is reportedly planning to retire from international cricket following the initial two T20Is against Australia. Though nothing has been officially communicated either by Cricket West Indies (CWI) or the player, it is being reported that the experienced player will soon bring an end to his international career.
The 37-year-old Jamaican all-rounder has had a phenomenal career with the Windies, particularly in the white-ball cricket. Russell has appeared in a total of 140 games in ODIs and T20Is combined, scoring 1034 runs in ODIs and 1078 runs in T20Is.
Andre Russell Likely To Play His Farewell T20I On Home Ground
According to ESPN Cricinfo, Andre Russell will retire from international cricket after playing the first two T20Is against Australia, both scheduled to be held at his home ground, Sabina Park in Jamaica. The first T20I will be played on July 21 while the second game is on Wednesday, July 23. He is not expected to travel to St Kitts for the remaining three matches of the five-match T20I series.
The ongoing series is part of Australia’s multi-format tour of the West Indies, which started with a three-match Test series that the visitors won 3-0. The T20I series begins on Sunday, July 20.
Russell had previously hinted at the possibility of playing the T20 World Cup in 2026, which is to be held in India and Sri Lanka. However, reports now say that the power-hitter has shifted his focus entirely to franchise cricket.
He continues to be a valuable player for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and plays for a number of KKR-owned teams in various franchise leagues around the world.
Interestingly, Russell was a key player in the two West Indies' T20 World Cup victories of 2012 and 2016 and is highly regarded for his match-winning talent. Amid a time of crisis in West Indies cricket, his retirement would mark the end of an era in international T20 cricket.
