Team India have had an impressive start to their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, securing a commanding victory over Ireland by 8 wickets at Nassau County Stadium on Wednesday.

This match marked a significant moment as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma opened the batting for India together for the first time in three years. The number three batting position was a topic of much speculation leading up to the game.

In the match, wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant took on the number three role after Virat Kohli was dismissed for just 1 run

Pant played a crucial role, scoring an unbeaten 36 runs and guiding India to a smooth finish. His performance was praised by India's batting coach Vikram Rathour, who confirmed Pant’s position in the team.

"Yes, he has been batting really well. The two games (warm-up and Ireland) he has played, he has looked really, really good,” Rathour told the media. "At the moment he (Pant) is our No. 3 and it helps that he is a left-hander,” he added.

In a surprising move, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma made several changes to the playing XI, resting Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, Kuldeep Yadav, and Yuzvendra Chahal. Despite these changes, the team performed admirably, demonstrating their depth and versatility.

India's next challenge will be a highly anticipated match against arch-rivals Pakistan on June 9 at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.
