Ahead of Pakistan’s opening game of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, USA skipper Monank Patel said he is wary of the threat that Babar Azam poses with the bat, and that his bowlers will focus on getting him out, as his wicket will be crucial for the hosts to pull off a miraculous victory.

Babar is currently one of the world's finest batters across all formats and is undoubtedly Pakistan’s standout player. With 4023 T20I runs in 112 innings and having been the highest run-scorer in the 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup, opposition teams are acutely aware of the danger he presents.

When Pakistan and the USA face off for the first time in T20 cricket, the USA bowlers will be looking to get Babar out early.

"Babar is a great batsman in all the formats. He is the main player and he is the captain. If he plays long innings, we have seen in the past also. So yeah, his wicket will be really important for us and we all know his stats. He's been very consistent in T20s," said Monank Patel ahead of the match against Pakistan.

The USA team made a strong statement in their debut on the world stage with an emphatic win over rivals Canada.

Their come-from-behind victory in the tournament opener at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Texas, on Sunday, June 2, showcased their potential.

The Monank-led USA side showed that they should not be considered mere minnows and are determined to make a significant impact on the global cricketing stage.

They will be facing an unpredictable Pakistan team that has suffered defeats to Zimbabwe and Afghanistan in ICC events.
