The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is contemplating to ‘retire’ the prestigious Pataudi Trophy competition. The trophy is awarded to the winners of the bilateral Test series played between India and England in England.
It is worth noting that Team India is also slated to tour England later this year to play a five-match Test series. While the series was originally intended to constitute as the latest edition of the Pataudi Trophy, ECB’s reported development might rebrand India’s upcoming tour.
ECB likely to retire Pataudi Trophy
The ECB is reportedly contemplating to make way from the prestigious Pataudi Trophy in a bid to rebrand England’s home Test series against India. The move might come into effect ahead of India’s upcoming five-match trip to England in June.
While an ECB spokesperson refused to confirm or deny the development, Cricbuzz confirmed that a source close to the family of the late MAK Pataudi stated that any such move would occur with the understanding of the English board.
The trophy was named after former Indian captain MAK Pataudi, who played 46 Tests between the years 1961 and 1975.
The trophy was first awarded back in 2007 during India’s three-match Test tour of England. While India won the inaugural edition, hosts England bagged the subsequent three editions of the competition with emphatic margins in 2011, 2014 and 2018 respectively. The 2021 chapter ended up in a 2-2 stalemate between the two sides.
Notably, for India vs England Test series played in India, the winner receives the Anthony de Mello Trophy.

The Indian cricket team will tour England in June, i.e., shortly after the IPL 2025 to play a series of five Test matches. The first Test will be hosted by the Headingley Cricket Ground from June 20.
The series will also constitute a part of the 2025-27 WTC.
