Sri Lanka showcased an exceptional performance under the astute guidance of Sanath Jayasuriya, completing a remarkable 2-0 series sweep against New Zealand. Their victory in the first Test by 63 runs set the tone, but it was the second Test where they truly shone, defeating the Kiwis by an innings and 154 runs. This monumental achievement not only marks Sri Lanka's first Test series win against New Zealand in 15 years but also strengthens their position in the World Test Championship standings.

The second Test match at Galle International Stadium saw New Zealand's batting lineup fall apart dramatically on Day 3. Chasing Sri Lanka's huge first-innings score of 602, New Zealand was bowled out for just 88 runs, unable to level the series. Starting the day at 22 for 2, the visitors could only add 66 more runs before Sri Lanka’s bowlers wrapped things up. This match highlighted New Zealand’s struggles, especially after losing the first Test and being on the back foot for most of the series.

Sri Lanka bowlers led the charge to victory, with Prabath Jayasuriya being named Man of the Match for his six wickets. Debutant Nishan Peiris also shined, taking three wickets in his first Test.

The netizens took to platform X (Twitter), slamming New Zealand and wishing Sri Lanka's performance. Comments ranged from praise for Sri Lanka’s prowess to critiques of New Zealand's recent form, with one user noting, “New Zealand tried shame. Sri Lanka were too good 🔥.” Another said on the Kiwis' ongoing struggles, underlying their inability to win away Tests since 2021.

Sri Lanka's Win Percentage Rises In WTC

Sri Lanka's win percentage in the World Test Championship rose to 55.56, enhancing their chances of a top-two finish. In contrast, New Zealand's performance has placed them seventh in the standings, with a percentage of 37.50. As Sri Lanka prepares for future challenges, including crucial Tests against South Africa and Australia, the potential for upward movement in the rankings remains within reach. The results of these upcoming matches will be vital in determining Sri Lanka's fate in the ongoing World Test Championship.
