The Indian Premier League (IPL) is set for major changes ahead of the 2025 mega auction. The IPL governing council, led by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has introduced several new retention rules and regulations that will remain in effect until the 2027 edition. These updates aim to improve team flexibility and player management during the tournament. One of the biggest changes revolves around injury replacements and retention slabs.

Massive Update For Injury Replacements

One of the most significant changes coming into effect in IPL 2025 concerns injury replacements. Previously, franchises had to find a replacement for an injured player before their seventh match of the season. However, starting in 2025, teams can now seek injury replacements up until their 12th match of the league phase. This extension allows franchises more time to assess player conditions and plan strategically during the league stage.

Moreover, the IPL has decided to reinstate the player loan process, which allows teams to loan players during the season. Although this rule was introduced earlier, it has never been used by any franchise. The BCCI hopes that by reintroducing this option, teams may have more flexibility in managing their squads during the tournament.

Retention Slabs For IPL 2025

In another major update, the IPL governing body has released retention slabs for the 2025 season. These rules determine the amount deducted from a franchise's purse based on the number of players retained before the auction.

If a team chooses to retain five capped players, the deduction from their purse will be as follows:

  • For the first three retentions: ₹18 crore, ₹14 crore, and ₹11 crore.
  • For the next two retentions: ₹18 crore and ₹14 crore.

For uncapped players, the retention cost has been maintained at ₹4 crore, the same as during the 2021 mega auction. This means if a franchise retains five capped players and one uncapped player, it will lose ₹79 crore from its total purse of ₹120 crore, leaving them with just ₹41 crore for the auction. However, if a team retains four capped players and two uncapped players, they will forfeit ₹69 crore from their purse.
