Former India captain, Sunil Gavaskar has lauded Rohit Sharma for stepping aside and acknowledging R Ashwin's contribution in his 100th Test match, which took place in Dharamsala against England, earlier this year.

Gavaskar stated that Rohit allowing Ashwin to lead the side out of the ground after his brilliant fifer was a 'hallmark of a great captain.'

Rohit Sharma's brilliant gesture towards Ashwin

Rohit Sharma is always touted as players' captain, someone who is patient with his players and over the years, the India captain has gained massive following amongst teammates due to his caring nature as the leader of the group.

There is hardly anyone who speaks in a negative way about Rohit, and that speaks volume for a cricketer who has served the nation for almost 17-years now. Writing in his column for Mid-Day, Gavaskar wrote:

“Rohit acknowledged Ashwin’s contributions by letting him lead the team out to field in the all-rounder’s 100th Test, a hallmark of a skipper confident and relaxed in his own skin and ready to step aside and give the accolades to the achiever.”

Wish Jadeja, Ashwin would have captained India: Gavaskar

Writing in his column, Gavaskar lauded the performances of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the first Test Vs Bangladesh. Both the batters shared an important partnership in the first innings and rescued India out of a tricky situation.

Ashwin also completed a stunning century and gained praise from the cricketing fraternity for his stellar performance.

“In the first Test of the current two-test match series, the way the two Ravi Ashwin and Jadeja brought the team back in the game showed this team is never done and can get back even if the referee has reached the count of eight. Both these all-rounders have been magnificent over the years and rescued and then won several games for India."

“It would have been fitting if they had captained India too even if it was for one game, but for them winning matches for India is the only thing that matters” he added.

It was Jadeja and Ashwin's partnership in Chennai which put Bangladesh on the back-foot, after the Tigers made a roaring start. The duo also worked magic with the ball, especially Ashwin, who bagged 6-wickets in the second innings to seal the win.
