England Women won the rain-marred second ODI against India to level the three-match series 1-1. After restricting the ‘Women in Blue’ to just 143-8 in a 29-over inning, the hosts frolicked towards an eight-wicket win in a revised chase of 115 runs from 24 overs, doing so with three overs to spare to enforce a decider at Chester-le-Street.
However, the seemingly one-sided affair also staged its share of drama, as a brief flashpoint involving Indian spinner Deepti Sharma and English opener Tammy Beaumont sparked memories of the infamous Charlie Dean run-out at the same venue from 2022.
Same Bowler, Same Venue, Similar Drama
Back in September 2022, i.e., nearly three years ago, in a match between England Women and India Women at Lord’s, visiting spinner Deepti Sharma clipped the bails at the non-strikers end to run out a well-set Charlie Dean under controversial-yet-fair circumstances. Deepti’s bold final act sealed the match in India’s favour as Harmanpreet Kaur’s troops bagged the series 3-0.
Cut to present day at the same iconic London-based venue, involving the same Indian bowler, only this time around, England opener Tammy Beaumont found herself on the spotlight on a couple of occasions.
With England chasing 115 runs from 24 overs, the hosts raced to 36-0 around the first five overs when Beaumont reached a confident 25* off 17 balls. At the time, the cricketer clipped a Deepti Sharma delivery towards midwicket. While Beaumont set off for a run, she scampered back after Jemimah Rodrigues pounced on the ball to fire it back towards the wicketkeeper. The ball ended up ricocheting off Tammy’s pad instead, prompting the Indian fielders to appeal for “obstructing the field”.
While the English opener survived the call upon television inspection, she survived another scare in the following Deepti Sharma over when the Indian spinner pulled out of her delivery stride, even though Beaumont was not excessively backing up at the time.
Nonetheless, the ODI drama between India Women and England Women will now continue at Chester-le-Street in Durham on Tuesday, July 22. With series on the line, the upcoming decider promises a gripping finish to a contest already laced with tension, history, and no shortage of friction.
