The T20Is are here and there will be more than just redemption on West Indies’ mind. When Rovman Powell walks out to bat in the first T20I against Australia on Monday, he will have history in his sights and a legend to leapfrog.

Powell Knocking On Gayle’s Door

West Indies might have been handed a 0-3 thumping in the Tests but Rovman Powell has the chance to bring a bright spark to the white-ball leg. With just 25 runs separating him from Chris Gayle, the former skipper is inching closer to becoming the second-highest run-scorer for West Indies in T20Is.

Rovman Powell currently sits pretty at 1,875 runs from 95 T20Is at an average of 26.40 and a blistering strike rate of over 142. He has already got a century and nine fifties to his name and with just 25 more runs, he will go past none other than Chris Gayle.

The Universe Boss, who sits second on the list with 1,899 runs in 79 games, carried the Windies through countless battles with his two hundreds and 14 fifties. His T20I numbers speak for themselves, an average of 27.92 and a strike rate of 137.50. But now, Powell is on the cusp of eclipsing one of the greats.

Pooran Still Tops The Charts

At the summit sits Nicholas Pooran, who stunned fans by retiring from international cricket at just 29. Pooran signed off with 2,275 runs in 106 T20Is, averaging 26.14 with 13 fifties and a best of 98. His strike rate of 136.39 rounds off a career that while brief, left an impact.

Powell still has a bit of climbing to do to reach Pooran, but leapfrogging Gayle would be a massive milestone in itself.

Time To Turn Things Around

West Indies come into this five-match T20I series with a few bruises from the Test series loss. Their batters struggled to put runs on the board, even as the bowlers threw everything at the Aussies. But in T20s, it’s a different game. A fresh start. And with the head-to-head between WI and AUS tied at 11-11, there is everything to play for.

That said, West Indies have won just once in their last six T20Is against Australia. They will be desperate to flip the script and there is no better time than now with the T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka slowly creeping into view.
