Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the richest cricket leagues in the world. It not only earns huge revenue but also provides players with excellent opportunities and high salaries. Since the IPL started in 2008, player trades between teams have become a regular part of the league, beginning in 2009.

One of the biggest trades in recent years was the move of Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya from the Gujarat Titans to the Mumbai Indians in 2023. This move surprised many because Hardik was the captain of the Titans and had led them to two IPL finals in a row, winning the championship in 2022.

The Massive Trade Deal That Brought Hardik Pandya Back To MI

Despite this success, Hardik chose to return to his original team, Mumbai Indians, where he first made his IPL debut. Many fans and cricket followers were curious about how much money Hardik Pandya earned from this high-profile trade.

The deal between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans was an all-cash transaction. Hardik Pandya’s salary with Mumbai Indians is ₹15 crore per season, which is approximately $1.8 million.

On top of this salary, Hardik is also entitled to receive 50% of the transfer fee that Mumbai Indians paid to GT for his trade. The exact amount of this transfer fee has not been made public, but it is understood to be a significant sum, adding considerably to Hardik’s total earnings from the deal.

According to ESPN report, the trade was a mutually beneficial arrangement for both franchises. Gujarat Titans are owned by CVC Capital, a global investment firm focused on profits and returns.

Notably, CVC Capital not only got ₹15 crore back into their auction purse by releasing Hardik, but also received a huge transfer fee from the IPL itself, which is speculated to be around ₹100 crore as reported by Indian Express

For them, selling Hardik Pandya was a strategic move to make financial gains. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians are owned by one of India’s wealthiest business families, the Ambanis, who consider factors beyond just profits, including loyalty and team building.

Hardik Pandya's Successful  With Gujarat Titans

Notably, Hardik Pandya’s time with Titans was marked by remarkable success. He was picked up by GT before the 2022 IPL auction. In his first season, Hardik led Titans to win the IPL trophy, a huge achievement for a new team.

The following year, under his leadership, GT made it to the final again but lost in a thrilling match against Chennai Super Kings. Despite this success, Hardik decided to return to Mumbai Indians, a move that brought him back to the team where he began his IPL career.
