In a significant development, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has handed hefty penalties to Indian opener Pratika Rawal and England cricket team for separate Code of Conduct breaches in the first Women's ODI between the two teams.
Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, India had a stellar start to the series, winning the first match comfortably by four wickets. However, after the game concluded, the ICC took strict disciplinary actions on Rawal and the English team, finding them guilty of breaching its code of conduct.
ICC Sanctions Pratika Rawal And England Players After 1st Women's ODI
Indian opener Pratika Rawal played a valuable knock of 36 runs before Sophie Ecclestone castled him in the 19th over. However, the stylish right-handed batter barged her shoulder with Ecclestone, thereby committing a Level 1 offence of the ICC Code of Conduct.
Interestingly, Rawal had a similar collision with English pacer Lauren Filer, an incident that the ICC deemed inappropriate. As a result, she was fined ten per cent of her match fees while also being handed a demerit point.
Meanwhile, the apex cricketing body found the English side guilty of breaching article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which is related to the minimum over-rate offences. The hosts were one over short of their target in the stipulated time. So, the ICC imposed a five per cent penalty on the England players, including skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt.
Talking about the match, the first ODI between India and England Women witnessed a cracking encounter. Batting first, England posted a respectable total of 258 runs, riding on magnificent half-centuries from Sophia Dunkley and Alice Davidson Richards.
However, the target eventually proved to be insufficient for the India Women, who chased it with eight balls and four wickets to spare, with Deepti Sharma smashing a glorious unbeaten knock.
The second ODI between the two sides will be played on July 19 at the iconic Lord's in London.
