A riveting contest between India and England ended in a controversy after Indian spinner Deepti Sharma ran out England's Charlie Dean at the non-strikers end.

Pundits spoke out

Greats among the game and male counterparts of England women's team spoke out against the incident, Dean's dismissal resulted in a landslide win for India. Players including Sam Billings, Stuart Broad and James Anderson criticised the spinner for violating the 'spirit of cricket'.

Deepti Sharma clears the air

Currently, the rules provide for a 'warning' to the umpire. Bowlers can point out if a non-striker is leaving the crease early to the umpires to prevent any violations.

"We had warned Charlie Dean multiple times, even informed to the umpires about this and then we did run-out under the rules"

MCC releases a statement

The MCC soon released a statement clarifying that non-strikers should be inside the crease while the ball is being bowled, and ruled out any violations by the Indian spinner.

"MCC's message to non-strikers continues to be to remain in their ground until they have seen the ball leave the bowler's hand. Then dismissals, such as the one seen yesterday, cannot happen."

The rule will officially come into effect on 1st October 2022.
