Former India and Uttar Pradesh cricketer Praveen Kumar has accused senior teammates of damaging his reputation over allegations of drinking. He subtly criticised his former teammates, stating they all used to drink.

Praveen had a relatively short international career, marked by reports of off-field concerns, including speculations about an alcohol-related issue. Recently, the ex-Indian cricketer has made a noteworthy statement concerning the public perception created around him.

While reflecting on his career, Praveen expressed frustration over creating a negative public image, emphasising that those who knew him personally understood his true nature.

In a candid interview with The Lallantop, Praveen revealed that during his time in the Indian team, seniors would advise against drinking and other activities, yet everyone indulged in such behaviours.

“When I was in the Indian team, seniors said 'drink nahi karna, yeh nahi karna, woh nahi karna' (Don't drink, don't do this, don't do that). The senior players said. Karte sab hai. Lekin wahi baat hai na ki badnaam kar dete hai 'PK toh drink karta hai'. Sab peete hai (Everybody does it but they tarnished me saying I drink',”  Praveen Kumar said on The Lallantop.

While he refrained from naming individuals like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, or MS Dhoni, Praveen emphasised that a negative image was unfairly created around him.

“Nahi. Naam nahi lena chahta camera pe. Pata sabko hai kisne PK ko badnaam kiya. (I don't want to take the person's name. Everybody knows him),”  added Praveen.

He lamented the tarnishing of his reputation and emphasised that those who knew him personally were aware of his true character.

“Those who know me personally, they know how I am. A bad image of me has been created,”  concluded Praveen.

Praveen's struggle post retirement

Praveen's international career spanned six Tests, 68 ODIs, and ten T20Is for India. He gained recognition during the 2008 Commonwealth Bank Tri-series against Australia and Sri Lanka, contributing significantly to India's historic victory.

Apart from his international career, Praveen also played in the Indian Premier League (IPL), representing teams like Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kings XI Punjab, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Gujarat Lions.

After his retirement, Praveen has faced challenges in transitioning to a coaching role after retirement. His coaching aspirations in the domestic circuit were thwarted for unclear reasons.
