Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka is set to go on trial for a rape charge related to an alleged incident that took place while he was in Australia to participate in the T20 World Cup last year.

Gunathilaka, 32 years old, was initially suspended by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) following his arrest in November. However, last month, three out of the four sexual assault charges against him were dropped.

During a court hearing in Sydney today, Gunathilaka pleaded not guilty to the remaining charge of sexual intercourse without consent. Additionally, he sought to modify his bail conditions, requesting that he only be required to report to the police three times a week instead of daily.

Mr. Sahinovic, Gunathilaka's defense lawyer, presented arguments for the reduction in charges against his client and highlighted his clean criminal record as factors that warrant less restrictive bail conditions.

Magistrate Susan Horan, however, stated that she requires an updated fact sheet before making a decision on the application, expressing concerns about the potential risk of Gunathilaka failing to appear in court.

In February, his bail conditions were modified to allow him to use the WhatsApp messaging service and go out at night. Initially, when he was granted bail in November 2022, he was prohibited from using Tinder and other social media platforms.
