Ranked No.1 Test bowler in the world, spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was dropped from India's playing XI against Australia in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 citing conditions, and the bowler's track record in England. Rohit Sharma and Team India management went ahead with four pacers and a lone spinner for the marquee match, where after initial helpful conditions, Indian bowlers failed to impress.

Australia's Travis Head and Steven Smith tore apart the bowling attack, and hammered 251 runs for the fourth wicket, helping their side to 327 for 3 at stumps on Day 1. Several former Indian, England, and Australian players have lashed out at Team India for dropping Ashwin and fielding an XI based purely on the conditions.

Ashwin's capabilities as a bowler have never been in doubt and the off-spinner's maiden outing for Surrey at The Oval in County Championship 2021 proves exactly that.

The off-spinner rattled his former side Somerset in the second innings, claiming a six-fer, which included wickets of Steven Davies, Tom Lammonby, James Hildreth, George Bartlett, Roelof van der Merwe, and Ben Green.

Ashwin claimed the wicket of Lammonby in the first innings on Day 1 of the four-day encounter.

The 36-year-old has as many as seven five-wicket hauls in County cricket in just 10 matches, dispelling myths about the Tamil Nadu-born being a bowler for subcontinental conditions.

Regardless of conditions, Ashwin's knowledge and experience make him a direct inclusion in the playing XI most of the times.

It will be interesting how India makes a comeback on Day 2 of the WTC Final, pinning all their hopes on the second new-ball.
