Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka has been absolved of three of his four sexual assault charges in an ongoing case in Australia by the public prosecutor.

Gunathilaka, 32, was arrested by the New South Wales Police in November 2022 while he was a part of the Sri Lanka squad for the ICC T20 World Cup.

The southpaw was charged with four counts of sexual misconduct by a woman he met via a dating app.

According to the complainant, she had met the Lankan cricketer via the dating app, which ultimately translated into a date at the Sydney Bar.

The couple then made their way to the woman's home in the eastern suburbs, where the alleged assault took place.

The charges mentioned by the woman include digital penetration, stealthing- sex without a condom- and non-consensual choking.

The woman also alleged that she feared for her life.

However, since then, the case has been marred with various delays. Last month, the prosecution successfully applied for adjournment, which took the proceedings of the case past the six month window.

Gunathilaka's lawyer Alen Sahinovic argued that his client was being subjected to mental harassment in a foreign country with limited family support.

Gunathilaka has now been released on bail and he is due back in court on July 13.
