Former Australian batter Damien Martyn is showing remarkable signs of recovery after being admitted to hospital with meningitis. According to reports, doctors are now hopeful of moving him out of the ICU following what close friends have described as a “miraculous” turnaround.

Martyn, 54, was taken ill on Boxing Day and admitted to a hospital on the Gold Coast, where his condition initially caused serious concern.

He was placed in an induced coma as doctors worked to stabilise him. For several days, his family and the cricketing world anxiously waited for updates, fearing the worst.

Damien Martyn’s health improves dramatically

However, in the last 48 hours, Martyn’s condition has improved dramatically. He has now woken from the coma and is able to talk and respond to treatment.

Doctors are now optimistic that Damien Martyn could soon be moved out of the ICU into another ward, a major step forward in his recovery.

While he will remain in the hospital for continued treatment and monitoring, the outlook is now far more positive than it was just days ago.

Former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist, a close friend of Martyn, shared an update on behalf of the family. He described the recovery as “extraordinary” and said the speed of improvement had surprised even medical staff.

"It's been an unbelievable turn of events in the last 48 hours. He is now able to talk and respond to treatment. He has responded extraordinarily well since coming out of the coma to the point where his family feels it's like some sort of miracle. He's in good spirits and overwhelmed by the support," Gilchrist said in a statement.

Martyn’s wife expressed gratitude for the prayers

Meanwhile, Damien Martyn’s wife, Amanda, has thanked the cricket community and fans around the world for their messages, prayers, and support.

"His wife Amanda just really wants to say to everyone she is convinced that the love, goodwill and sense of care that they felt from everybody, via messages and via the coverage in the press really helped him. They just feel blessed so many people have wanted to support him in his time in need," he added.

According to Adam Gilchrist, the family strongly believes the overwhelming love and goodwill played a role in lifting Martyn’s spirits during a critical time.
