Former Australian cricketer Damien Martyn has been discharged from the hospital after recovering from meningitis. The 2003 World Cup winner had been admitted last week and was under close medical observation after his condition raised serious concerns.

Martyn is one of Australia’s most respected batters of the early 2000s. He played 67 Test matches for Australia, scoring 13 centuries and averaging over 46.

In 208 ODIs, he scored more than 5,000 runs at an average of 40.8. Martyn retired from international cricket in 2006 but has remained a respected voice in Australian cricket.

Damien Martyn is back home after a swift recovery

Last month, Damien Martyn was admitted to the hospital in Perth and diagnosed with meningitis. He was placed in an induced coma to prevent further deterioration of his health.

The 49-year-old was treated promptly by medical staff, which proved crucial in stopping the infection early.

Thankfully, Martyn has now returned home. He has been discharged from the hospital. Although doctors said he will still need time to fully recover.

Adam Gilchrist shared the good news during live Ashes coverage. Speaking on Kayo Sports, he confirmed that Damien Martyn had been released from the hospital and passed on a message from the family.

“The wonderful news is that he has been released from hospital. He’s still got a bit of a journey to go to be fully recovered, but it’s terrific and wonderful to know he’s back home, and his family express their gratitude and thanks for all the support," Gilchrist said.

He also praised the quick action taken by the ambulance and medical teams, saying it played a major role in Martyn’s recovery. Adam explained that the early response helped stop the infection from spreading further, which can be life-saving in cases of meningitis.

Mark Waugh emotional after learning about Martyn’s recovery

Former Australia captain Mark Waugh, who was also part of the broadcast, spoke emotionally about Martyn’s condition when he was in intensive care.

Waugh said the situation had looked very serious and that the turnaround has been remarkable.

“It’s almost a miracle, really. He was looking in really bad shape when he was in the ICU," Waugh said.

While Damien Martyn is now home, both Gilchrist and Waugh made it clear that his recovery is still ongoing. The former batter will need rest and time to regain full strength, but the worst appears to be over.
