The final day of the fifth Ashes 2025 Test produced a dramatic moment as Brydon Carse and Jake Weatherald were involved in a heated exchange. The flashpoint came after a controversial DRS decision went in Weatherald’s favour, leaving the England camp furious.

The game was nearly slipping away from England, as Australia needed just 160 runs to win. The visitors were all fired up at the SCG for one final moment of fight.

Brydon Carse, meanwhile, almost trapped Australia opener Jake Weatherald in the 7th over until Snicko betrayed him.

The England fast bowler delivered a short ball outside off stump, which Weatherald attempted to slash. England appealed loudly for a caught behind as wicketkeeper Jamie Smith claimed the catch.

But on-field umpire Ahsan Raza ruled it not out. Ben Stokes immediately went upstairs for a review, hoping for a breakthrough.

Replays showed a faint spike on Snicko, but the third umpire felt it was not clear enough to overturn the decision. The on-field call stood, and Jake Weatherald survived on 16. That is when things really started to heat up.

Brydon Carse looked livid about the decision. He went out to have words with umpire Ahsan Raza and appeared to argue the call, clearly unhappy with the outcome.

England captain Ben Stokes quickly stepped in and physically pulled his bowler away to prevent the situation from escalating further.

Ben Stokes steps in to calm the tensions

The drama did not end with the review. After the over was completed, Brydon Carse and Jake Weatherald exchanged words mid-pitch. Carse was still animated, clearly upset about the decision, while Weatherald responded with a smile, seemingly unfazed by the controversy.

Ben Stokes, having calmed down his teammate, had an animated discussion with the umpire himself to comprehend the reason behind the decision.

While he remained calm, his frustration was evident. The England players felt hard done by, especially given the importance of early wickets on the final day.

The crowd reacted loudly, and social media immediately lit up with debates over the Snicko reading. The Snicko has already been a centre point of controversy throughout the Ashes series over irregularities.

Australia seal Ashes with a 4-1 finish

Meanwhile, the early heated confrontation only fuelled Australia as they went on a rampage in the chase. Travis Head, Jake Weatherald and Marnus Labuschagne scored 29, 34 and 37, respectively.

Small contributions from Steve Smith and Cameron Green ensured Australia got to their target in 31.2 overs and sealed a 5-wicket victory. With that, Australia have won the Ashes 2025-26 by a 4-1 finish.

Mitchell Starc has been named Player of the Series for picking up 31 wickets across five games at 19.94 average and two five-wicket-hauls.
