CSK To Release MS Dhoni? BCCI Considering 'Less' Retentions For IPL 2025

According to emerging reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is contemplating reducing the retention limit ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. As reported by News18, the apex body is considering three retentions per team, with each franchise having one Right To Match (RTM) card to use during the auction.

Previously, the ten franchises were permitted to retain four capped players, releasing the rest into the auction pool.

However, with the new three-retention rule, the teams will need to strategise carefully when selecting their core players for the marquee event, adding a new layer of complexity to the game.

Although the price tags associated with the top three retentions have yet to be revealed, the salary caps of the retained players will likely be high, as they have been over the years.

Therefore, if the purse amount remains unchanged, the teams are likely to release a few big names who don't justify their price tag.

Therefore, if the BCCI implements the three-retention rule, the teams might release such players and attempt to reacquire them in the auction using the RTM card. This could significantly alter the dynamics of the auction, adding a thrilling element of unpredictability.

For example, if CSK releases MS Dhoni to the auction pool, there's less probability that the other teams will break the bank for the legend, considering his age and recent batting form.

Although he has been the most prolific figure in the Super Kings dressing room, it seems like Dhoni's time in CSK might come to an end.
