In a recent update, BCCI has requested a release of Mustafizur Rahman, a fast bowler from Bangladesh, from KKR, well before the start of IPL 2026 season. The decision comes amid rising political and social tensions linked to recent events in Bangladesh.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the move on Saturday, stating that the board had formally communicated its request to the franchise.

Talking to PTI, he added that KKR has been allowed to seek a replacement player if required, and the BCCI will approve the request once it is made.

Fans divided after Mustafizur Rahman’s forced IPL exit

KKR had signed Mustafizur for ₹9.20 crore at the IPL auction. However, the signing soon became controversial following reports of violent incidents targeting Hindu minorities in Bangladesh.

A textile factory worker who was allegedly blamed for blasphemy was murdered, while a Hindu youth was lynched to spark widespread protests and outrage in India.

These events intensified calls for action against Bangladesh at various levels, including sport.

Hence, amid heavy backlash and pressure, BCCI decided to cut Rahman loose, triggering a wave of mixed reactions on social media. While some fans backed the call, a few accused the BCCI of mixing politics with cricket and also hinted at double standards.

"BCCI with Mustafizur Rahman." - @mxtualstrk

"Instead of holding BCCI accountable, these hate-filled clowns kept obsessively targeting SRK, even though the call on foreign players is clearly BCCI’s job." - @Sk3Shakib

"KKR management is probably realizing they could have bought a nice villa in Alibaug for that money instead of acquiring a geopolitical headache!😭" - @notsocraxy

"Before the IPL auction, the ICC and BCCI released the T20 World Cup schedule, which shows the entire Bangladesh team coming to India to play. Nobody is talking about that, but everyone has a problem with the fact that one Bangladeshi player is playing for KKR. If the entire Bangladesh team plays in India, there is no threat to Hinduism." - @sports_vaani

"BCCI should have excluded bangladeshi players before auction..Anyway he is not an important player for us..so good riddance" - @IamNitish98

Notably, Bangladesh is set to visit India for the T20 World Cup 2026. Not only that, the Tigers have already released an itinerary for a bilateral series in India in September 2026.

However, BCCI is yet to confirm any such arrangement. Since the political tensions between the two countries remain on the boil, cricket will suffer from collateral damage in the near future.
