Arshdeep Singh, India’s premier left-arm fast bowler, has made a strong case for higher honours with a devastating five-wicket haul in the Vijay Hazare Trophy clash between Punjab and Sikkim.

He ripped through Sikkim’s top and middle order to finish with figures that prove he is India’s most reliable white-ball bowler.

Arshdeep Singh makes a strong case for ODI call-up

Bowling first, Arshdeep Singh set the tone immediately for Punjab. He bowled inside the first two overs and got rid of opener Amit Rajera with a good delivery that induced a poor shot.

What came next was a relentless spell of disciplined seam bowling, marked by tight lines, subtle movement and smart changes of pace.

Sikkim were reduced to 10/2 inside two overs at the start and the innings never really got going after that. Arshdeep returned for a second spell to dismiss key batters through different phases of the innings.

His scalps included captain Lee Yong Lepcha and the dangerous Palzor Tamang, ensuring Sikkim had no platform to rebuild.

By the time Arshdeep Singh finished his spell, Sikkim were eight down for just 58 in 18.3 overs.

While Sukhdeep Bajwa and Gurnoor Brar supported well, it was Arshdeep who dictated the game. He finished with 5 for 26 in 9.3 overs with an economy rate of 2.74.

India’s ODI squad selection is due this weekend

The timing of this performance is significant. With India preparing for an ODI series against New Zealand, questions remain over the bowling combination, particularly the left-arm pace option.

BCCI is set to pick the squad in the next 24-48 hours, and Arshdeep Singh has used his final chance to knock on the gate.

While he has the most wickets (110) for India in the T20I format, Singh has featured in 14 ODIs till now, picking 22 wickets, including a five-wicket-haul.

However, with Jasprit Bumrah likely to be rested, his case for an ODI comeback is stronger than ever before.
