KKR’s signing of Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman for the IPL 2026 season has triggered a political and social controversy. Amidst this, the IPL governing body has clarified that, unlike Pakistan nationals, Bangladeshi players are allowed to feature in the league.
The controversy erupted after reports of violence against minorities in Bangladesh led some Hindu religious leaders and BJP politicians to question KKR’s decision to include a Bangladeshi player in the squad.
BJP leader Sangeet Singh Som went as far as calling Shah Rukh Khan, the KKR co-owner, a “traitor, alleging that associating with players from Bangladesh was against national interest.

Similar remarks were echoed by other religious figures, who demanded that Mustafizur Rahman be removed from the team and his auction fee redirected towards relief efforts.
Congress leaders and Muslim organisations, however, defended Shah Rukh Khan, arguing that IPL franchises operate under the regulations of the BCCI and international cricket bodies, not political sentiment.
Amid growing speculation, the BCCI stepped in to clarify its position. In an official statement through senior officials, the board apparently confirmed that there is no ban on Bangladeshi players participating in IPL 2026.
The BCCI reportedly stated to InsideSport that it remains in touch with the Indian government regarding diplomatic developments but has received no directive that would prevent Mustafizur Rahman from playing.
"Bangladesh is not an enemy nation. As of now, there is no reason to bar Bangladeshi players from the IPL,” a senior BCCI official said.
The BCCI’s stance aligns with its long-held approach of keeping the IPL a merit-based, inclusive tournament, apart from the longstanding exclusion of Pakistani players due to bilateral issues.
So for now, Mustafizur Rahman remains a Knight and will play for KKR in the IPL 2026 season, beginning in March.
