Senior Indian batter Shreyas Iyer successfully completed his first 50-overs match simulation on Friday, January 2; according to reports. Recently rehabilitated at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (COE), the cricketer is now subject to make his return to competitive cricket through Mumbai’s upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Himachal Pradesh on January 6 in Jaipur.

Shreyas Iyer has been out of action ever since he sustained a nasty injury while fielding in India’s third ODI of the three-match series in Australia a couple of months ago.

Shreyas Iyer to play one more match for fitness clearance

As reported by sports journalist Nitin K Srivastav on X, Shreyas Iyer successfully completed his first 50-overs match simulation on January 2. The cricketer will now be making his domestic return for Mumbai in the upcoming Elite Group C match of the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy against Himachal Pradesh at Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

The match marks Shreyas Iyer’s second of his ‘two-match simulation’, as reported earlier this week.

If the 31-year-old successfully completes his second simulation match, he will rightfully receive a clearance for national selection again, and might well find a place in India’s squad for the upcoming three-match home ODI series against New Zealand.

Shreyas Iyer last played an ODI, or any international match for Team India back in October 2025 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) against Australia, where a nasty injury forced him out of the field midway.

The charismatic right-handed batter has already been ruled out of Team India’s red-ball and 20-overs contention, considering he last played a Test match back in February 2024 in Vizag against England and his last T20I back in December 2023 against Australia in Bengaluru.

With a spotlight on next year’s 2027 ICC Men’s ODI Cricket World Cup, it remains to be seen whether Shreyas Iyer can successfully force his way back into India’s ODI setup.
