The IPL 2026 season is still a few months away, but the controversy has already followed the league, and it is related to KKR signing Bangladesh star pacer Mustafizur Rahman. Pressure has mounted on franchise owner Shah Rukh Khan to release Mustafizur before the season begins, and it is due to the atrocities on Hindus being reported from Bangladesh.
The former IPL winners spent a whopping 9.20 crore to acquire the services of the left-arm seamer, but it looks like they need to find a replacement as people have voiced their opinion on the same and have demanded the franchise to not include the Bangladesh player in the IPL.
Is KKR liable to pay 9.20 crore to Mustafizur if he gets released?
Social media has been set on fire with hashtags like #BoycottKKR and #BoycottIPL. Hence, the pressure has mounted on the franchise to take immediate action before things get more heated.
In the IPL rules, BCCI can only ban a player if there is a valid reason for it, but here the case is different, as there is no clause mentioned related to players being released on political protests.
It is also to be noted that there is a ‘no play, no pay’ clause, but that only comes into effect if a player backs out of the tournament at the last moment, or isn’t available due to an injury. However, the case is different for Mustafizur. As per the IPL rules, players and the franchises sign a contract before the season commences, and the Bangladesh seamer has done the same with KKR.
Can KKR sign a replacement if Mustafizur is released?
There is a growing tension before the IPL 2026 season as KKR is facing public heat. In case the Bangladesh player gets released, the team will have an overseas spot left vacant, and the IPL rules allow them to fill in the gap by bringing in a replacement for next season.
