The ongoing Test series between India and England witnesses ace batter and former captain Virat Kohli opt out of the contention due to personal reason, which meant selectors were faced with selection issues for the last three matches of the five-match contest.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) opted to feature young batters, instead of experienced out of favour players, which has found criticism from few sections, namely not finding an able replacement for Kohli, which former India bowler Karsan Gharvi found Cheteshwar Pujara to be apt.

Pujara, who last played for India in World Test Championship 2023 Final, has despite churning out runs in ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024 season does not find himself in the Test race.

As quoted by Times of India, Gharvi stated that Pujara's dropping was surprising for him, and that the Saurashtra player would have been the 'greatest replacement' for Kohli.

Cheteshwar was not only the greatest replacement but ... - Karsan Gharvi

“I don't understand the reason why Cheteshwar Pujara was dropped. He should have been in the Indian team right from the first Test. At first, Virat Kohli was not playing the first two Tests and now it has been announced that he would not be playing the remaining three Tests. Cheteshwar was not only the greatest replacement but the greatest player they should have included.

He is still fighting, he is still in good form, he is very much in good shape and even if he comes back, I won't be surprised.”

Pujara in the ongoing Ranji competition has slammed 673 runs in six matches, and is the tournament's fourth-highest run-getter.

In a move, which could either be a masterstroke or backfire, selectors have showed faith in the likes of Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, and Dhruv Jurel for the remainder of the series.
