India’s veteran Test batter, Cheteshwar Pujara, once again, grabbed the headlines on the back on his masterclass knock during Saurashtra’s recent clash against Services. The Elite Group A clash between Services and Saurashtra in round four ended in a draw on Monday. In pursuit of a 536-run total posted by Services in the first innings, Saurashtra began the day with a 382-run deficit.

Despite suffering a back injury, Pujara came to bat and played a sensational 91-run knock for his team. He helped his team cross the 450-run mark but fell just 9 runs short of reaching another hundred.

The game eventually ended in a tie. Saurashtra has only secured one win in the ongoing Ranji season but Cheteshwar Pujara has shown a rich vein of form. Despite being overlooked by selectors amidst the ongoing Test series against England, the veteran batter continued to prove that he still has a lot of years of cricket left in him.

During his 91-run knock, he also completed 7000 first-class runs for the Saurashtra team. He is the only second batter to reach the feat after Sitanshu Kotak. Pujara has played 260 first-class matches in his career and has managed to score 20,013 runs at an outstanding average of 51.98.

Earlier, he made heads turn with a scintillating double-century scored against Jharkhand. He played a sensational unbeaten knock of 243 runs in just 356 balls. He followed it up with an impressive knock of 43 and 66 against Vidarbha.

Much to the delight of the fans, Pujara also reached the 20,000-run mark in first-class cricket in the process. Despite not being included in the squad for the Test series against England, Pujara has been scoring a plethora of runs in the ongoing season.

He is currently the fourth-highest run-getter this season, amassing 535 runs in just 4 matches at an average of 107. He last played a Test match for India in the World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023. His scores in that Test match read: 14 and 27.

The 36-year-old was dropped after the Test and has been wanting to make a comeback, since.
