The famous MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, popularly known as Chepauk, is getting a massive makeover. Ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup and IPL, a new turf will be installed at the venue to match international standards.
Chepauk is one of the most important cricket stadiums in India. It's home to the Chennai Super Kings of the IPL and the state team of Tamil Nadu.
Over the decades, it has hosted some of the most unforgettable matches in cricket history. However, with the evolution of generations, it's time for the venue to get a makeover.
Chepauk Stadium To Get New Turf
Located near Marina Beach, the 109-year-old stadium can seat 38,000 fans and has 11 different pavilions. Right now, renovation work is in full swing. According to ETV Bharat, no international matches will be held here until the end of the year.
The stadium’s old grass and earthen flooring are being completely removed. Workers are replacing them with a fresh mix of sand, red soil, and clay to create a lush new green surface.

The transformation is not only for the pitch; the whole stadium is to be modernised, offering players and spectators an improved experience. With the Women’s Cricket World Cup and the Men’s T20 World Cup coming to India next year, Chepauk is expected to host some of the big games.
2026 T20 World Cup To Be Hosted By India
The next edition of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. India and Pakistan are likely to be placed in separate groups, given the political tensions that were heightened by the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack and a subsequent military standoff.
The tournament will feature an all-time high of 20 teams, including Canada, the Netherlands, and Italy. Hosts India and Sri Lanka are joined by automatic qualifiers Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, South Africa, West Indies, USA, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Ireland.
