The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held a long meeting on Sunday in Mumbai. It discussed in detail the aftermath of India's disappointing tour of Australia. Skipper Rohit Sharma, who has been under fire, and head coach Gautam Gambhir were present, as were BCCI President Roger Binny and newly elected secretary Devajit Saikia.
The two-hour session was largely devoted to India's 1-3 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and failing to qualify for the World Test Championship final.
The BCCI has chosen not to make any hasty moves despite the dismal display - particularly towards the batting order from seniors like Rohit and Virat Kohli. With the Champions Trophy just six weeks away, the board is being extra cautious as any dramatic change would shock the team out of its rhythm. A source close to the board mentioned that:
"There was a detailed discussion on the Border Gavaskar Trophy performance and what all went wrong and the course correction required. But do not expect a hurried decision from the new dispensation of BCCI."
Rohit-Kohli In Deep Waters Amid Poor Form
Rohit Sharma was highly criticized after the series for his disappointing performances in Australia and scored only 31 runs as a result of which he avoided playing the last Test at Sydney. Kohli was also not great in Test matches, as he scored 190 runs in five games with an average of 23.75. While, his performance in the opening Test, where he scored a century, has saved him from too much scrutiny; it is however still quite uncertain what the future for Rohit.
The Champions Trophy, to be played in March 2025, will likely play a crucial role in deciding their careers. Both are important to India's ODI setup, and the performance in the tournament will significantly influence the decisions of the BCCI.
Ro-Ko To Play Domestic?
Moreover, the BCCI wants to prevent players from "cherry-picking" assignments, with Gambhir making it clear that each and every player should agree to playing Ranji Trophy besides international cricket for remaining in contention.
