Team India assumed full control over West Indies, courtesy of ace fast bowler Mohammad Siraj. His pace mate Jasprit Bumrah also picked up three key wickets, and secured a huge bowling landmark for India in Tests in the process. In other news, Zimbabwe and Namibia teams have qualified for the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup next year.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Thursday, October 2.

Siraj, KL Rahul knock down West Indies on Day 1 of first Test

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj shattered West Indies batting line-up with a sensational four wicket-haul on Day 1 of the series-opening first Test match at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. The speedster dismissed Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Brandon King, Roston Chase among others; and received much assistance from pace mate Jasprit Bumrah and ace spinner Kuldeep Yadav to blow away the visitors for just 162 in 44.1 overs.

In response, KL Rahul punched out a commanding 53* to take India to 121-2 in 38 overs by stumps, as the hosts find themselves just 41 runs away from the West Indies.

Jasprit Bumrah beats Kapil Dev for huge Indian bowling record

Legendary Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah dismissed West Indies opener John Campbell before mopping up the tail to claim figures of 3-42 from his 14 overs on Day 1 of the Ahmedabad Test. Through the course of his latest three-wicket haul, Bumrah also completed 50 wickets at home in his Test career, doing so in just 24 innings from 13 matches. The seasoned speedster went past Kapil Dev (25 innings), and levelled up with Javagal Srinath (24 innings) to become the quickest Indian bowler, in terms of innings, to complete 50 Test wickets in the format.

Zimbabwe, Namibia qualify for T20 World Cup 2026

The Zimbabwe and Namibia cricket teams have qualified for the upcoming 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next year. Both Zimbabwe and Namibia recently defeated Kenya and Tanzania respectively in the two semifinals of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Africa Region Final 2025-26 in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe’s latest win helped them seal a spot in a T20 World Cup for the first time since 2022 as they failed to make it to the 2024 edition last year. Namibia, on the other hand, qualified for their fourth T20 World Cup in a row since making their tournament debut in 2021.

Ravi Ashwin to play entire BBL 2025-26 after ILT20 snub

Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin will now play the entire BBL 2025-26 season for the Sydney Thunder, confirming the same just a day after going unsold at the player auction of the ILT20 2025-26. Ashwin recently announced his retirement from IPL cricket to make himself available for playing in overseas T20 leagues. The legendary off-spinner was subsequently acquired by the Sydney Thunder for his BBL debut, initially agreeing to play just three games towards the latter half of the season owing to his possible ILT20 commitment.

Afghanistan to tour Zimbabwe in October

Zimbabwe Cricket has confirmed that the Zimbabwe team will be hosting Afghanistan for one Test and three T20I matches. The tour will commence with the one-off Test in Harare between October20 and October 24. The three T20Is will also be hosted by the Harare Sports Club, albeit from October 29 and November 2. The Afghanistan team also toured Zimbabwe late last year to play two Tests, three ODIs and three T20I matches.
