Bangladesh overcame Afghanistan in a tight finish in Sharjah to go 1-0 up in the three-match T20I series. After half-centuries from Bangladeshi openers Tanzid Hasan and Parvez Hossain Emon, Rashid Khan induced a dramatic collapse to tilt the tide back in Afghanistan’s favour, only for Nurul Hasan and Rishad Hossain to notch up the winning runs for Jaker Ali’s troops.
Here, we take a look at the entire highlights of the first T20I of the three-match series between Afghanistan and Bangladesh, as it panned out at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah on Thursday, October 2.
Gurbaz, Mohammad Nabi guide Afghanistan to 151 after early wickets
Bangladesh bowlers Nasum Ahmed (1-18), Tanzim Hasan Sakib (2-34) and Rishad Hossain (2-33) hunted in packs to dismantle Afghanistan’s top-order at 40-4 around the powerplay overs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz at number three steadied Afghanistan’s sinking ship to some extent by scoring 40 off 31 balls with two fours and three sixes.
However, his dismissal to Tanzim Hasan Sakib at 95-6 further jolted Afghanistan’s prospects, before Mohammad Nabi bludgeoned a hasty 25-ball 38 in the slog overs. Sharafuddin Ashraf also chipped in with a quick 17* as Afghanistan managed to chart a competitive 151-9 in 20 overs. For Bangladesh, senior pacemen Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman picked up a wicket each at the death.
Rashid Khan makes a match out of a dull chase after big opening stand
Bangladesh openers Tanzid Hasan (51 off 37) and Parvez Hossain Emon (54 off 37) punched out brisk half-centuries and compiled a 109-run stand together for the first wicket in just 11.4 overs. Fareed Ahmad trapped a well-set Emon to bag Afghanistan’s first breakthrough, before captain Rashid Khan made the most out of their newfound momentum with a sensational four-wicket haul.
Rashid induced a dramatic batting collapse in his tight four-over spell (4-18), as Bangladesh slipped from 109-0 to 118-6 in the space of just 24 balls. With pendulum swinging towards Afghanistan, Bangladesh’s Nurul Hasan (23* off 13) and Rishad Hossain (14* off 9) overcame nerves with steely cameos to take their team home in 18.4 overs.
