Sydney Thunder face an anxious wait over skipper David Warner’s availability after the veteran opener picked up a knee injury ahead of their final home game of the season against Melbourne Renegades on Monday.
Warner has been named in the Thunder squad but remains no certainty to play, with the franchise expected to give him every possible moment to prove his fitness before the toss in what has been another frustrating chapter of Thunder's BBL campaign.
David Warner injury scare clouds Thunder plans
The 39-year-old raised concerns during Saturday’s clash against Brisbane Heat after failing to take the field following his innings. David Warner had earlier top-scored with 82 from 56 balls before being run out, climbing to second on the tournament’s leading run-scorers list.
Despite his solid form, Warner’s knee issue could sideline him for the Melbourne Renegades clash at Sydney Showground Stadium. Having already missed games earlier this season through injury, support staff will monitor him closely, with a late match-day decision expected.
Notably, David Warner’s absence could open the door for young opener Sam Konstas, who was dropped for the Brisbane Heat game at the Gabba. Konstas has not been at his best this season, scoring just 127 runs at an average of 18.14 with a strike rate of 110.43.
Sydney Thunder’s poor campaign nears bottom finish
Sydney Thunder’s season has suffered a lot this season after an impressive finish last season as runners-up. With just one win from eight matches this time, they sit rooted to the bottom of the BBL15 table and are already out of finals contention.
Even victories in their remaining fixtures against the Renegades and Sydney Sixers would not be enough to lift them into the top four, underlining the scale of their struggles.
Warner has been one of the few positives for the Thunder. After managing just 44 runs across his first four innings, he rediscovered form with a stunning century against the Hobart Hurricanes, becoming the oldest BBL centurion, and followed it up with scores of 67* and 82.
Whether or not Warner features again this season, Thunder appear destined for a last-place finish, bringing a disappointing campaign to a subdued close.
