Adithya Ashok is a young leg spinner who recently broke into international cricket for New Zealand. He made his ODI and T20I debut for the kiwis back in 2023. Known for his sharp leggie and a deceptive googly, Adithya Ashok is seen as a promising talent for the future.
Despite his young age, Adithya is being eyed as a future key spinner for the Black Caps. With veteran Ish Sodhi nearing the end of his career, New Zealand could be grooming him as a reliable white-ball option, combining skill, variations, and a fearless approach on the field.
Adithya Ashok: Born in Vellore, raised in New Zealand
Ashok was born in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, before his family moved to New Zealand when he was just four. Growing up in Auckland, he fell in love with cricket early, sharpening his skills in school and local leagues, quickly standing out as a talented leg spinner.
Representing New Zealand in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup in South Africa, Adithya impressed with his ability to make the ball turn sharply and challenge top batters. His performances earned him recognition as a future Black Cap, putting him firmly on New Zealand’s cricketing radar.
After his youth cricket success, Adithya did well for Auckland in domestic cricket and went on to make his debut for the Black Caps in both ODI and T20I cricket in 2023. Unfortunately, major back surgery later that year kept him sidelined for almost a year, challenging his resilience but strengthening his determination to return stronger.
Adithya Ashok training in CSK academy and chasing IPL dreams
In early 2025, Adithya trained at the CSK Academy, refining his variations across different surfaces which are not easy to get in New Zealand. The experience helped him adapt his bowling for international conditions and sparked a dream to play in the IPL, potentially representing CSK in the future.
Now, on his first tour of India as a Black Caps player, Adithya Ashok is taking the field in his native land after being named in New Zealand’s XI after the toss for the first ODI in Vadodara. Fans are excited to see him perform at home, blending his Indian roots with his Kiwi cricketing experience.
