Warner ruled out vs Hurricanes [Source: @abubakartarar_/x.com]
In a bizarre incident, Sydney Thunder captain David Warner injured his right leg while playing at the beach alongside his children, and as a result, the star player will miss Thunder’s opening Big Bash League (BBL) fixture against the Hobart Hurricanes on Tuesday.
He has been receiving treatment from the medical team, and the skipper could be ready to make his return for the clash against Sydney Sixers on Saturday. In his absence, Chris Green will lead the Sydney Thunder side, while young pacer, Charlie Anderson has been brought in as a replacement for Tuesday’s encounter.
"It's obviously not ideal to not have Davey but we'd rather be careful earlier in the tournament," Thunder general manager Trent Copeland said.
"I'm confident he’ll be right for our biggest game of the year, the Sydney Smash on Saturday.
Thunder to miss Warner's quality in their opening fixture
In the absence of David Warner, the Thunder will have a depleted batting lineup against the defending champions, the Hobart Hurricanes. Last season in the BBL, Warner was the Thunder’s leading run-getter with 405 runs as the team failed to cross the final hurdle and lost in the grand finale against the Hurricanes.
Warner's quality to take down the opponent inside the powerplay always comes in handy and in his absence, someone else has to take that responsibility.
His prowess at the top of the order will be missed, and in his absence, the team could try a different opening combination with Sam Konstas likely to open alongside Cameron Bancroft or Matthew Gilkes.
