Viacom18 has bagged both television and digital rights to broadcast international cricket matches played in India for the 2023-2028 cycle. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), following its tried-and-true approach, conducted an e-auction to distribute these rights.

Viacom18 outbid Dinsey Star & Sony Pictures Network

Viacom18, who outbid the likes of Disney Star, Sony Pictures Network, has positioned itself as a key player in this sector by navigating the auction and clinching the rights for an impressive Rs. 67.8 crore per match.

The remarkable valuation signifies a substantial increase from the previous rights acquisition in 2018 when Disney Star acquired the rights at Rs. 60 crore per match. The total for Viacom18's successful bid amounts to Rs. 5,966.4 crore for the entirety of the five-year tenure.

The official announcement of this significant development was made by BCCI's General Secretary, Jay Shah on Twitter.

It is worth mentioning that the BCCI's auction for media rights was a closely monitored event with speculation initially hinting at interest from industry giants such as Amazon and FanCode. However, these notable contenders chose to stay out of the auction process.

The comprehensive rights package was initially available as separate television and digital packages, priced at Rs. 20 crore and Rs. 25 crore per match respectively.

The deal will commence with the upcoming India vs Australia series in September 2023. The Viacom18-BCCI association consists a total of 88 bilateral matches which comprises 25 Test matches, 27 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 36 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).

Notably, the television and digital rights deal comes on the back of Viacom18's already significant stake in the Indian Premier League (IPL) digital rights, as well as full rights for the Women’s Premier League (WPL). This deal has further strengthened their dominance and influence in Indian cricket broadcasting.
