The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reached unprecedented revenue levels in the financial year 2023-24 (FY24), with a larger portion of revenue coming from the Indian Premier League (IPL). According to reports, BCCI made total revenue of ₹9741.7 crore during FY24 and the IPL contributed more than 59% to that amount.
It's no hidden secret that the BCCI is the richest cricket board globally. Their revenue model is built on a sport that is worshipped as a religion in India. However, the board’s revenue initially was ordinary until IPL came into the picture.
BCCI Once Again Records Huge Revenue Through IPL
According to the Hindu Business Line, which quoted data from Rediffusion, BCCI recorded a massive revenue of ₹9,741.7 crore during the 2023–24 financial year. The IPL alone supposedly brought in ₹5,761 crore, which accounts for 59% of BCCI’s total earnings.
The increasing popularity of the IPL globally, thanks majorly to the Indian audience, has resulted in a consistent increase in media rights and sponsorship contracts. In 2023, BCCI sold IPL’s media rights to Disney Star and Viacom 18 for over ₹48,000 crore for a five-year cycle.
While the IPL remains BCCI’s strongest revenue engine, the board is not completely dependent on it. BCCI also earned ₹361 crore from non-IPL media rights, including international series played by Team India.
The report also says that BCCI can also look at commercialising traditional domestic cricket formats like the Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and CK Nayudu Trophy to reduce its dependence on the IPL. Additionally, the board could explore investments in international leagues to expand its global footprint.
All thanks to IPL's huge success and sound financial planning, BCCI is still the world's strongest and richest cricket board. With new vistas opening up in both domestic as well as international markets, its future appears even brighter.
