According to emerging reports, the BCCI and the ECB have joined forces to oppose the blooming of the Saudi Arabia-backed T20 league. As a result, the lucrative tournament, which was supposed to thrive as part of a $400 million project, now faces a significant threat.
BCCI, ECB Not To Issue NOC For Saudi-Backed T20 League
Saudi Arabia is all set to propose an expensive T20 league worth $400 million. However, with multiple franchise leagues having already been established, the BCCI and ECB have a genuine fear of losing their core players to the cash-rich Saudi league.
Therefore, as reported by The Guardian, the Indian and English cricket boards have apparently decided to not only oppose the idea but also influence the ICC against recognising the T20 league.
The report claims that the cricketing bodies discussed it during the World Test Championship final, with representatives from both boards sharing their thoughts on the matter.
"During discussions at the World Test Championship final at Lord's this month, the ECB and BCCI agreed to unite in opposing the new league. The boards agreed they would not issue "no objection certificates" to their players to sign up for the new competition, as well as lobbying the International Cricket Council (ICC) to withhold their endorsement," The Guardian wrote.
Earlier, Cricket Australia (CA) expressed its eagerness to help Saudi Arabia launch the T20 tournament. The Australian board aimed to earn profit through the flow of cash from a private investor, as its own franchise tournament, the Big Bash League, is owned by the governing body and the states.
However, with two powerful boards opting against supporting the competition, the future of the Saudi Arabia-sponsored league looks bleak at the moment.
