Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), might face the BCCI's wrath, with the Indian board planning to get him sacked as one of the ICC directors over his controversial actions in the Asia Cup. Notably, Naqvi, who serves as the chairman of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), ran away with the trophy after the Indian team refused to take it from him due to his Pakistani origin. The BCCI has reportedly decided to take the matter to the ICC and vouch for Naqvi's removal as one of the directors in the ICC.
BCCI planning to get Naqvi sacked from ICC
Although Mohsin Naqvi was present at the Dubai International Stadium to present the Asia Cup trophy to the winner of the final, the Indian team kept him waiting on the podium after defeating Pakistan in the game. Suryakumar Yadav and his men had communicated to the organisers that they wouldn't receive the trophy from Naqvi, with India and Pakistan's cricketing ties worsening in the aftermath of the Operation Sindoor.
The Indian team celebrated their Asia Cup victory without the trophy, which Naqvi took to the ACC headquarters with himself. As things stand, the trophy is still in the ACC headquarters, and Naqvi has strictly instructed that it shouldn't be handed over to India without his approval.
The BCCI believes neither the Asia Cup is Naqvi's personal property nor he, as the ACC chief, has any right to hand it over to the winning team. As reported by PTI, the BCCI will speak to the ICC over Naqvi's inappropriate behaviour and even put forth a formal proposal to sack him from the apex body.
"It remains to be seen what will be the long term ramifications for the PCB or Naqvi because the BCCI is clear he (Naqvi) didn’t have any right to insist on handing the trophy himself to the Indian team and refusing to send it to the BCCI who were official hosts of the event," a source was quoted as saying by PTI.
India-Pakistan tussle in Asia Cup
Talking about the Asia Cup, India and Pakistan met each other three times in the tournament, with India emerging victorious on all occasions. Although Pakistan managed to put up a fight in the final, the Men in Blue eventually crossed the finish line, riding on Tilak Varma's batting excellence.
