In a significant development at the Special General Meeting (SGM) on Sunday (January 12), former cricketer Devajit Saikia has been elected as the new secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Prabhtej Singh Bhatia has been appointed as the treasurer during the same meeting. Saikia has been appointed after Jay Shah’s exit from the role to take up the position of ICC chairman. However, it is important to mention that, prior to this Saikia was given the role of acting secretary by BCCI President Roger Binny.

This decision was made under the powers vested in Binny by Article 7.2 (d) of the BCCI constitution. Importantly, it is also worth mentioning that his appointment was only temporary.

Devajit Saikia was the sole nominee for the respective post, making the elections a smooth process. His appointment is expected to bring fresh perspectives to BCCI operations as Indian cricket continues to flourish at global stage.

Who is Devajit Saikia?

Devajit Saikia’s is a former wicketkeeper-batsman who has represented Assam in four first-class matches between 1990 and 1991. He has scored 53 runs at an average of 8.83 with a highest score of 54. He also contributed behind the stumps with eight catches and one stumping. However, his playing career was short-lived due to limited opportunities.

After stepping away from active cricket, Saikia pursued a career in law, practicing at the Gauhati High Court. His connection to cricket remained steadfast, and he later became a prominent figure in cricket administration.

His administrative journey began with the Assam Cricket Association (ACA), where he was elected unopposed as secretary in 2019. His tenure was widely appreciated for its efficiency and vision. In 2022, he advanced to the position of joint secretary at the BCCI
