In a significant development, on December 9 (Monday), the BCCI made an important announcement and appointed Devajit Lon Saikia as the acting secretary of the board. This appointment comes after Jay Shah stepped down from the position to assume his new role as the Chairman of the ICC on December 1, 2024.

It is important to mention that, Devajit Saikia, had previously served as the joint secretary of the BCCI, has been elevated to the acting secretary position by BCCI president Roger Binny. This decision was made under the powers vested in Binny by Article 7.2 (d) of the BCCI constitution. Importantly, it is also worth mentioning that his appointment is only temporary.

As per BCCI regulations, no election was held to fill the secretary position, and his tenure will remain uncertain until a permanent appointment is made. While some reports suggest that he could hold the position until the BCCI elections in September 2025.

Among the list of all BCCI Secretaries Jay Shah, Amitabh Choudhary, Ajay Shirke , Anurag Thakur, Sanjay Patel are the notable names in this list.

Who is Devajit Saikia?

Devajit Saikia’s has a long association with cricket. He is a former wicketkeeper-batter, Saikia played four first-class matches between 1990 and 1991, where he scored 53 runs. In addition to his batting, he took eight catches and recorded a stumping, but his career as a player did not reach the heights he had hoped for.

After his short-lived playing career, Saikia transitioned into law, and started practicing law at the Gauhati High Court.
