In a significant development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to conduct a special General Meeting (SGM) in January 2025 to elect new office-bearers and fill the top positions left vacant after the resignations of Jay Shah as secretary and Ashish Shelar as treasurer.

Jay Shah Replacement Set To Be Finalized In January

According to reports of PTI , the SGM will likely be held in Mumbai during the second week of January, with January 12, 2024 emerging as the preferred date. The meeting comes after an urgent Apex Council meeting, held virtually on December 19, approved the decision to convene the SGM and instructed the current office-bearers to finalize the exact date and venue.

"Yes, after the Apex Council Meeting on Thursday, state units were sent a notification about the date of the SGM, which is January 12 at the BCCI headquarters," a state association president told PTI.

Recently, Jay Shah's duties were temporarily assigned to joint secretary Devjit Saikia by BCCI. Along with the secretary’s position, the resignation of treasurer Ashish Shelar also created a vacuum in the board’s leadership. As the BCCI prepares to fill these crucial positions, the SGM will be play a significant role to fill in these positions.

The main agenda of this meeting is to address these vacancies, and the board expects to finalise the new appointments as soon as possible. The date and venue of the meeting are expected to be officially confirmed by December 20, 2024.

The meeting also comes at a time when BCCI had to manage international challenges, that include the Champions Trophy 2025 dispute. Under the tenure of Jay Shah, the Champions Trophy 2025 will be played in hybrid model, with India's matches to be  played at neutral venues.

It is important to mention that, Jay Shah has already taken over as the youngest chairman of ICC on December 1. And Ashish Shelar, a seasoned BJP politician, has been appointed as the cabinet minister in the recently-formed Maharashtra government.
