BCB-ICC held discussion to resolve T20 World Cup deadlock [Source: @CricketX64/X.com]
In a fresh update, the BCB and the ICC apparently held a meeting through video conferencing to discuss issues related to the T20 World Cup 2026. Bangladesh claims it rejected ICC’s appeal to reconsider its stance of not wanting to travel to India for the event.
The dispute centres on Bangladesh’s refusal to travel to India, the co-host for the T20 World Cup 2026, citing security concerns for players, officials and fans.
While the ICC was expected to bring some resolution in its official meeting, the BCB update suggests the deadlock will continue to linger.
BCB holds firm stand after video conference with ICC
On Tuesday, January 13, the BCB issued a media release confirming that a video conference had been held with the ICC to discuss Bangladesh’s participation in the tournament.
According to Subhayan Chakraborty, the meeting was attended by BCB President Md Aminul Islam, Vice Presidents Md Shakawath Hossain and Faruque Ahmed, Director Nazmul Abedeen, and CEO Nizam Uddin Chowdhury.
During the discussions, the BCB reaffirmed its decision not to travel to India, clearly stating that player safety remains its top priority. The board once again requested the ICC to consider relocating Bangladesh’s matches to venues outside India.
According to the release, the ICC pointed out that the tournament itinerary has already been announced and asked the BCB to reconsider its stance.
"During the discussions, the BCB reaffirmed its position regarding the decision not to travel to India, citing security concerns. The Board also reiterated its request for the ICC to consider relocating Bangladesh's matches outside India."
"While the ICC highlighted that the tournament itinerary has already been announced and requested the BCB to reconsider its stance, the Board’s position remains unchanged. Both parties agreed that discussions will continue to explore possible solutions," the media release said.
However, the BCB’s position remained unchanged, with both sides agreeing to continue talks to explore possible solutions.
BCB earlier caused confusion with false comments
The situation became more complicated after Bangladesh’s Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul claimed that the ICC’s security team had sent a document highlighting issues with playing in India.
This caused a storm, with reports saying the ICC made no formal communication regarding venue changes or heightened security threats.
In response, the BCB earlier issued a statement explaining that the correspondence mentioned by Nazrul was part of internal communication related to standard threat assessments.
It reiterated that this did not amount to the ICC agreeing to move Bangladesh’s matches. The board also confirmed that it had formally raised concerns and was waiting for an official reply.
The ICC is now expected to issue its own media release to clarify its position, but insiders suggest that changes to the schedule are highly unlikely given how close the tournament is.
ICC found no security threats in India
Adding further context, ESPNcricinfo reported that the ICC’s security assessment found no specific or heightened threat to the Bangladesh team in India.
The internal report, shared with the BCB’s security team, reportedly categorised risks as low to moderate in some venues and low to nil in others.
These levels are considered standard for international events and not usually grounds for relocating matches. The report also noted that claims about conditions such as player selection, fan movement, or election schedules were misinterpretations of routine contingency planning.
The ICC’s position remains that all teams are expected to honour their commitments under tournament regulations.
