Mohammad Rizwan was forced to ‘retire out’ by his Melbourne Renegades captain Will Sutherland earlier this week during match number 33 of the BBL 2025-26 season. Batting at number four, Mohammad Rizwan struggled to 26* off 23 balls by the end of the 18th over of the Renegades innings before skipper Sutherland himself arrived at the crease.
However, the move merely backfired as Sutherland got himself run out by Daniel Sams later in the same over for just a single.
Tanvir Ahmed lashes out at Melbourne Renegades skipper, defends Rizwan
Former Pakistan fast bowler and outspoken cricketing personality Tanvir Ahmed has called out Melbourne Renegades captain Will Sutherland for allegedly disrespecting Pakistan great Mohammad Rizwan in the BBL 2025-26 season.
Taking to his X account shortly after Mohammad Rizwan’s unfortunate dismissal and Sutherland’s slog-overs failure, Tanvir Ahmed wrote, “This is the performance of Rizwan's captain — the one who called Rizwan off the field. He should be ashamed of himself.”
Mohammad Rizwan’s flop show in BBL 2025-26 continues
Contrary to Tanvir Ahmed’s claims, Pakistan’s senior wicketkeeper-batter Rizwan has been struggling to score at a brisk pace for the Melbourne Renegades this BBL 2025-26 season. Making his BBL debut last month, the cricketer has aggregated just 167 runs from eight innings so far at a substandard average of 20.87 and a lowly strike rate of 101.82.
Moreover, Rizwan has managed to clear the fence just once in the entire season after his first eight appearances in the playing XI.
While Rizwan did notch up a match-winning knock of 41 for the Renegades against Melbourne Stars in Melbourne on January 4, the Pakistani batter nearly jeopardized his team’s tall chase by taking 38 deliveries in his innings.
Rizwan’s underwhelming returns form part of a broader trend this season, with several Pakistani players struggling to adapt to the pace and demands of the BBL ‘Down Under’. Apart from Rizwan, his Pakistani teammates Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi and others have also endured a forgettable campaign, with performances falling short of the expectations attached to their reputations.
Nonetheless, Mohammad Rizwan along with his captain Will Sutherland and other Renegades teammates will now face Perth Scorchers in match 36 of the BBL 2025-26 season on January 15 at the Docklands Stadium in Melbourne.
