The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has reacted strongly to the claims of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) offering Chennai as Bangladesh team’s venue for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 matches. Earlier this month, the BCB and the Bangladesh government declined to send the Bangladesh team to India for the showpiece event citing security concerns.

Owing to the prevailing geo-political tensions between India and Bangladesh, cricket has found itself caught in the crossfire, with BCCI instructing the KKR franchise to expel Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the upcoming IPL 2026 season. The move triggered a sharp response from the Bangladesh government, which reportedly raised the possibility of boycotting Indian cricket in reaction to the decision.

BCB react to Chennai offer, stand by Bangladesh government

While speaking with the reporters, BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul confirmed that the board is yet to receive an official response from the ICC regarding their concerns about playing T20 World Cup 2026 matches in India.

He said, “We haven't yet received any reply from the ICC. We have sent all the attachments and proofs of our concern”.

Responding to BCCI’s offer of shifting Bangladesh’s share of T20 World Cup 2026 matches to Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram, the BCB chief said they are still Indian venues and do not address the broader security concerns raised by the board and the Bangladesh government. He added, “Any alternate Indian venue at the end of the day is an Indian venue. You all know that no unilateral decision can be taken and we have to abide by the government's diktat. We are standing where we had been a few days back.”

BCB unsure about Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup 2026 fate if boycott continues

The BCB chief also added that he cannot comment if the Bangladesh team is not allowed to shift their T20 World Cup 2026 matches out of India by the ICC. When asked about the same, he said, “I can't comment on what we will do if we aren't allowed to play in Sri Lanka unless the ICC sends its response.”

As of now, the Bangladesh team is placed in Group C of the competition, with group fixtures scheduled to be played in Kolkata and Mumbai.
